Possibly the most important piece and consideration in proper design and installation of a retaining wall is to recognize that, due to gravity, the material is moving forward and downsloping, which creates lateral earth pressure at the back of the wall.  It depends on the angle of friction and strength of the material amongst other items such as direction and magnitude of movement of the retaining structure.

Retaining Wall Types

Gravity Walls
A gravity wall depends on it’s mass which can be concrete, stone or any other heavy material to resist pressure from behind.  By leaning back in the direction of the retained soil, it may have a batter setback for stability improvement.  Many times, we make them using segmental concrete units or mortarless stone.  We can also make dry-stacked ones that are more flexible and don’t require a rigid footing.
In the early 1900s, taller walls were often gravity walls made from large amounts of stone or concrete.  Today we are building them most often as composite gravity walls for earth retention or with precast facing.  There are many other types such as gabions, crib walls, log cabin style from concrete or timber and filled with granular material, or soil nailed walls.

Cantilevered Walls
A Cantilevered Wall uses far less material than gravity walls.  These are made from internal stems and are reinforced with steel, cast in place concrete, or masonry that is mortared (many times shaped like an inverted T).  They are like a beam to a large structural footing.  They typically convert horizontal pressure from behind the wall to vertical on the ground below.  Sometimes they are buttressed in front, or have a counterfort on the back to improve strength with resisting heavy loads.  We keep the buttresses at right angles to the main flow of the wall. For these walls, they require rigid concrete footing at a good depth.

Sheet Piling Walls
We typically place Sheet Piling retaining walls in tight places and/or with soft soil.  They are made of vinyl, steel or wood planks that are driven into the ground.  If you would like a quick estimate of material requirements:  It’s usually driven a third above ground and two-thirds below ground as a rough number.  This can be altered depending on the environment.  Taller sheet pile walls will need an anchor to tie-back or placed in the soil a distance behind the wall’s face that is tied to the wall by a rod or cable.  We then place the anchor behind the “potential” failure plane in the soil.

Bored Piling Walls
Bored pile walls are built by assembling bored piles, by excavating the excess soil.  The bored pile wall could include a series of reinforcing beams, earth anchors, soil improvement operations and a reinforcement layer of shotcrete.  We usually use this technique in scenarios where sheet piling is a suitable solution and where the noise or vibration levels that are created by a pile driver aren’t acceptable.

Anchored Retaining Walls
These can be constructed in any of the previous styles of walls that we have discussed, but also including additional strength using cables or other items anchored in the rock or mud/soil just behind it.  We usually drive into the material with boring.  The anchors then expand at the end of the cable, by injecting pressurized concrete or possibly mechanical ways.  This then begins forming a bulb in the soil after expanding.  We find this type of wall very effective where we expect high loads, or where the wall itself needs to be slim and would then be too weak.

Additional Notes

Technically, anyone with a strong back can stack blocks to build a retaining wall.  But for a permanent solution that will not fail, it takes skill and planning to construct something attractive that can also shrug off the forces of gravity and stand for decades.  Our walls laugh when bad weather comes, and you will do the same.  It’s all about a solid base, proper drainage and using the right materials.

Bottom line, there are tons of types of retaining walls blocks and number of ways by which we can customize what we build for you.

Different landscapes have different requirements, and we totally get that.  We want to work with you and guarantee your satisfaction.
